{PORTRAITS}: Where It All Began

I began by taking photographs of my younger brother, who was a senior at the time. At first, he refused. In fact, he only agreed when my mom promised that, if the photos turned out terrible, she would hire a photographer. Let's face it; I was an amateur. But I took his photos and when the time came for eliminating options, he wore a grin that couldn't be wiped off his face. I had an advantage that no other photographer would: I knew him—and I was able to capture his personality, taste, and whole being with a few pictures.

As family members and friends began to see my work, I continually got more requests for senior and family portraits. A few months later, one of my good friends from high school called to say she was getting married and wanted me to try engagement photos.

I learned quickly that my artistic eye values more photojournalistic moments, captured without planning, rather than perfectly posed portraits. I value the spontaneity in life and the ability that photography gives us to capture it.
